Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House - Barnsdall Park in Hollywood California

Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 to April 9, 1959) is one of America’s most revered and well- studied architects, famous for his prairie style and concrete block creations. What better place to celebrate his birthday than at Barnsdall Art Park, on the west lawn ofArt Deco Society of Los Angeles the famous Hollyhock House, commissioned by Arline Barnsdall in the early 1900’s.

Fundraising Effort to Restore and Revitalize the Barnsdall Park Grounds

Friends of Hollyhock House is once again embarking on a major fundraiser. The event is being co-hosted by the Los Angeles Art Deco Society- a group that celebrates and preserves the architecture, art, music, dance, clothing and elegance of Art Deco. The current fund drive will continue over the next two to three years for the purpose of restoring the landscape around Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House. Now that the house itself has been restored to its original glory, it only makes sense to bring the grounds up to par! For those who have not been inside the Hollyhock House, this is a great time to go and even if you have, it’s a good time to revisit as interior photos can be taken. Interior photography is something that is rarely allowed in the Hollyhock House so take advantage of this opportunity while it is available. The 1st floor of the house will be open with docents available to answer questions and provide information. After touring the Hollyhock House, stick around for the fun! There will be food trucks, a silent auction, lots of wine and music provided by Jim Ziegler’s Swingsations and Wendy Rea for your Art Deco era pleasure, and of course, birthday cake!

Eric Lloyd Wright, son of Lloyd Wright and grandson of Frank Elements of Frank Lloyd Wright's Architecture in 360 DegreesLloyd Wright will be in attendance to help raise funds as well. Contributors of $250 or more will receive a copy of the book “Panorama Wright- Elements of Frank Lloyd Wright's Architecture in 360 Degrees ". The Hollyhock House in Los Angeles - a beautiful creation of Architect Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House is a beautiful example of this famed architect's work. The Hollyhock house was built for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall between 1919 and 1921 and was Frank Lloyd Wright's first Los Angeles project.  The majority of his buildings are actually in Oak Park, Illinois where he designed 25 structures that were built between 1889 and 1913. Write is famous for his prairie style architecture of open spaces, and earth hugging buildings and furniture to match!

Frank Lloyd Wright had a prolific 70-year career during which he designed a plethora of amazing buildings. He has been called America's most innovative and creative architect and for good reason. 17 of his buildings have been designated by the American Institute of Architecture architectural as major contributions to American culture.

exterior details of the Hollyhock house depict the hollyhock flowerThe Aline Barnsdall's "Hollyhock House", was named for the use of the hollyhock flower design used both on the homes interior and exterior as well as the furniture inside. As other Frank Lloyd Wright creations, the Hollyhock house has evokes a Mayan feel and makes perfect use of the site on which it was built.

Guests are not allowed to take interior photos except on very rare occassions.  If you have the opportunity to see the Hollyhock house, notice how the theme of this flower is used throughout the interior and exterior archticture, window glass and particularly the furniture pieces.

The Hollyhock House was originally built as part of Frank Lloyd Wright's "Olive Hill", a thirty-six acre site theatre community, which never came to fruition.  Aline Banrsdall Olive Hilss was to include a performing arts center where she could produce her own avant-garde plays.  The Hollyhock house was to be her own residence, and the campus was also to include guest house "A" for the theater director, guest house "B",  artists studios, ahd retail shops. However, only Barnsdall's resdence, the Hollyhock House and the 2 guest houses were completed before the project was abandoned.

Wright was working Tokyo's Imperial Hotel during the construction of the Hollyhock House so much of the construction supervision was left in the hands of his capable son and landscape architect Lloyd Wright and his assistant, famed architect Rudolf Schindler.

barnsdall park wine tasting in the summer with Silver Lake WineAfter losing interest in completing the Olive Hill theater complex as originally conceived,  Aline Barnsdall donated the Hollyhock House and eleven surrounding acres to the City of Los Angeles for use as a public art park in 1927.  Today the house is part of Barnsdall Art Park in Los Feliz Adjacent East Hollywood with a local art gallery and theater and the grounds are leased for various events throughout the year.  Currently there are weekly Farmer's Markets held ath the park and during the summer month Silver Lake Wine hosts wine tasting events. Funds from such events combined with private donations have been used to rehabilitate the Hollyhock House and bring it back to its original glory for Angelinos and visitors to the area to enjoy.

Barnsdall Art Park is located at 4800 Hollywood Boulevard in the East Hollywood area of Los Angeles. Admission to the park is free but there is a nominal fee to view the interior of the Hollyhock House.  Public tours are offered Wednesdays through Sundays
12:30, 1:30, 2:30 & 3:30 PM without reservations and private tours can be scheduled as well. Check the Hollyhock Hock site for Park and Tour Specifics.

The Hollywood Christmas Parade brings Santa to town on Sunday 11/28/2010

The Hollywood Christmas Parade brings Santa to town on Sunday 11/28/2010

The Hollywood Christmas Parade has been an American tradition for more than eighty years! This year, the parade benefits Marine Toys for Tots and take place the Sunday after Thanksgiving at 6pm. The 2010 Grand Marshall of The 2010 will be Larry King (CNN’s Larry King Live). Ok, it’s not the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade or Pasadena’s Rose Parade but The Hollywood Christmas Parade is our own local festive event complete with a ton of celebrities, marching bands, floats, equestrians, giant balloons and general merriment. I’ve always enjoyed this parade from the curb- walking alongside and following the bands (my favorite part)! You can come early and plant yourself on the curb. Curbside seating is FREE and available all along the parade route starting east of the Grandstand Seating area on Hollywood Boulevard. The Hollywood Parade begins at Hollywood Blvd and Orange, travels east to Vine, south on Vine to Sunset Boulevard and west on Sunset, back to Orange.

Hollywood Christmas Parade Route

If you’d like to reserve a seat, grandstand tickets for the 2010 Hollywood Christmas Parade are now available for purchase within Associated Television International’s “live set” area located on Hollywood Boulevard between Orange Street and Highland Avenue.
