1973 Redesdale Ave Silver Lake -The Jenkyns House

The Jenkyns House, at 1973 Redesdale Avenue in Silver Lake was conceived by Josef Van der Kar in 1960.  Currently on its third owners, the The Jenkyns House is a prime example of modernist architecture and carries many of the traits made famous by the architect.  Punctuated by walls of glass, open living spaces and a brick wall fireplace, it is easily recognizable as one of Van der Kar’s works.

 Josef Van der Kar was a second-generation modernist known both for his political activism as well as his architecture. In the early 40’s, “Van” as he was known to friends, collaborated with fellow architect Gregory Ain (some of whose creations can also be found in Silver Lake) on a postwar housing project.  The ‘Community Homes” project was to exemplify utopian ideas but when the FHA imposed covenants to ban sales of the homes to minorities, Ain and Van der Kar refused to comply and project never came to fruition.

Van’s creations are flat roofed, post and beam homes with sliding glass walls that bring the outdoors inside. Interior doors swing or slide away, allowing the occupant to change room configurations for their own purposes- Similar to the Avenel Housing Project in Silver Lake, designed by Gregory Ain in 1947.  1973 Redesdale Avenue in Silver Lake is infused with many of these design elements.

Built in 1957, this mid-century Silver Lake home boasts 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms on a flat lot over 8,000 sf. If you are looking for a large family home a short walk from both Silver Lake Reservoir and Ivanhoe Elementary School, this could be your golden opportunity.

This 3200 sf home was designed by Gilbert Lester Leong, a pioneering Chinese American architect who designed residential and commercial buildings throughout Los Angeles. Leong co-designed the interior court and authentic Chinese garden in the Pacific Asian Museum in Pasadena. The family who originally commission Leong to design this home in 1957 still owes the property! That’s pretty rare for a home in Los Angeles.

My imagination really soared when I saw the potential in this mid-century home just around the corner from the Silver Lake meadow. The living room and dining room are quite spacious but my favorite room is at the back of the house on the ground level, complete with fireplace and opening up to a flat, grassy yard.

The bathrooms each retain their original period tiles and the kitchen will make you feel like you’ve taken a step back in time. There is actually a second ½ kitchen which helped the family prepare for those big holiday parties and barbeques. Leave it as is or combine the space into one large kitchen and open it to the fantastic backyard for an even better flow. The home is currently listed with Liz Johnson of Teles Properties for $1,380,000, a bit of a stretch for the property’s current condition in my opinion. New to the Silver Lake market is the Allyn Morris Design Studio and  residence at 2390 Silver Ridge Avenue in Silver Lake, California

Mid Century Modern architect, Allyn E Morris (1922-2009) built this unique Silver Lake Architectural of brick, steel and glass at 2390 Silver Ridge Avenue as his own personal residence and studio. The black and white photo from the 50′s shows the home as it still looks today (without the collector car under the carport!)

The cantilevered space  is compact at just 1026sf but feels larger due to its height and the walls of glass that open to expansive views.

The Allyn Morris Studio has a two story living room, dining and kitchen area with the master bedroom on a mezzanine. There are bright red accents throughout the house not only in the steel framing and and railings but in the kitchen and furnishings as well.

Red Spiral Staircase Creates Visual Impact

The master bedroom loft space is reached by  a spiral staircase of steel.  The staircase itself as visible from inside as well as outside the house is a design statement of its own.

The lower level had been used at the architect's studio but could certainly serve as a second bedroom for its next owner. It's unassuming street view of brick and single carport has changed little since the house was built in 1958.

The interior of this Silver Lake Architectural retains many original details from bathroom fixtures to mosaic and brick work. Stepping into the home is like stepping back in time.

Though the original kitchen of the Allyn Morris Design Studio was demolished, the updated kitchen remains true to the original design and  Morris provided advice and supervision during the remodeling. The cabinetry was painted a bright red to match the spiral staircase and other design elements of the house.

More about Mid Century Architect Allyn Morris

Allyn Morris was a bit of a rebel when it came to his architectural designs.  He studied architecture as UC Berkeley, apprenticed with Lloyd Wright and then moved on to do his own thing. He like to weave slender structures to follow the shape of the land, use steel beams and glass to allow for the best views and natural indoor lighting. 

The first home he built was the was the 1956 Max Bubeck house  in Eagle Rock-  another multi-level minimalist design of  steel, concrete, and glass.

Allyn Morris designed a number of inventive houses, apartment buildings, offices and shopping center. Most of his work included modern properties built in the 50′s,including the Echo Park apartments which have been converted to the condo complex known as Lago Vista.

More information about the architect can be found online as well as in  in publications such as  "A Guide to Architecture in Los Angeles & Southern California" and " Forgotten Modern: California Houses 1940-1970" by Alan Hess, available at Amazon.

As for the Allyn Morris Design Studio, it is currently listed with Crosby Doe at $668,000 and sure to garner its share of attention.

If you love old homes, it would be hard not to be taken by this Silver Lake craftmsan- talk about great curb appeal.  Interestingly, the interior has elements of both old and new.  From the original built-ins, fireplace and moldings in the living room and dining room to the funky sunroom with view of the yard and the pool out back.

The home is almost 1400sf and has 3 bedrooms and 1 bath. The lot is rather large for Silver Lake, coming in at 8,600 sf!  No wonder there is room for a pool, spa and side yard.
