Joyful times arrive in  Silver Lake on May 21st and 22nd when the 2nd annual 2-day music and arts street festival, The Silver Lake Jubilee unfurls a festival of music (50 + bands), comedy, literature (readings & book signings), film, "theater, dance and derby," the visual arts, and neighborhood organizing. If that's not enough to put you over the moon, Jet Propulsion Laboratory will be showcasing a Mars rover! With full schedules of performances on three different stages, even a fraction of the fun cannot be listed here, so make your plans at the Silver Lake Jubilee web site.

Families will enjoy an Eco Children's Grove at the Silver Lake Jubilee where they will be able to learn about community gardens, listen to readings from children's literature, and enjoy a variety of active fun and games. Local schools will be involved as well. There will be plenty of things for kids to do.

In keeping with the ideals of the Eco Grove, the Silver Lake Jubilee, in partnership with Sustain L.A., will have a consistent environmental tone, which includes a ban on plastic water bottles and Styrofoam. The Silver Lake Jubilee will offer access to free drinking water via water fountains set up throughout the festival, and festival-goers are encouraged to bring their own cups or re-usable water bottles. No bottled water will be sold.

Eateries and gourmet food trucks will abound at the Silver Lake Jubilee. Artisans and merchants will offer a variety of beautiful, handmade, and imaginative wares. And in a combined spirit of refreshment and relaxation, there will be also be a beer garden. Like last year, proceeds will benefit the Los Angeles Arts & Athletics Alliance. Sign up as a volunteer and enjoy a few hours of the festival from the other side to support local arts. Then plan some time to rest before the Sunset Junction Festival in August.

Silver Lake Meadow Finally Opens to the Public

If you are like most Silver Lake residents, you've been wonder when In the world the Silver Lake Meadow is going to open.  Well folks, that day is finally upon us!  After years of debate and planning,  the Silver Lake Medow is finally ready for prime time.

Tom La Bonge, Errcik Garcetti  and members of the Silver lake Reservoir Conservancy  will be on hand Saturday 4/2/11 at noon for the initial opening of the Silver Lake Meadow.  The meadow is on the east end of Silver Lake Reservoir. No doubt you 'noticed' it if you've ever taken advantage of the Silver Lake Reservoir Walking Path.

Neighbors near the reservoir had concerns that the open space might cause problems for the neighborhood with too much noise and commotion.  As a result, the Silver Lake Meadow will be limited to "passive recreation".   What that means is that people are welcome to walk, run, jog, sleep and simply relax in this new green space.  Soccer and softball, etc. are definite no-no's.

The Meadow will be open daily from dawn until dusk. Dogs are allowed on the path around the Silver lake reservoir, but not in the meadow even if on a lease so leave Fido home when you come to check it out.

Tomorrow's opening is being called a ‘soft opening' to the public. There are still some finishing touches to be made and a bigger grand opening celebration is expected to come in the next month or so.

Back in 2008, the future of this spot was decided. It took a bit longer than the expected to be able to open The Silver Lake Meadow to the public. Delays have been blamed on everything from the state's budget crisis to the weather.  Come Saturday at noon, the sorely needed 3 acres of green space will be open for the first time. I expect this will be a warmly received addition to the Silver Lake neighborhood and its residents!

Silver Lake Wine is a great place to spend your Sunday afternoon

I know that Silver Lake Wine has been in the neighborhood for a number of years now. I actually wrote a previous post about the business and what takes place at this hip Silver Lake wine shop. It wasn’t until this past weekend that I had the fortune of experiencing the place for myself first hand and I can’t think of enough good things to say about it.

I was the recipient of a gift card for Silver Lake Wine during the holidays and as my husband and I rounded the corner near of the Silver Lake reservoir last Sunday, I suggested we pop into the shop and see what it was all about. Unbelievably, there was a space right in front of the shop so we parked and trotted inside. Silver Lake Wine is neatly laid out with both wines and spirits as well as a small selection of refrigerated beverages and specialty foods. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and within moments of entering the shop, we were greeted and shown the lay of the land. I think the universe was smiling on us, as we just happened to stop in 15 minutes before their “Sundays at Three” tasting and they just happened to have room for 2 more tasters. It was an opportunity we were not about to pass up!

If you like wine and food pairings, Silver Lake Wine’s “Sundays at Three” tasting is a must. Every Sunday at 3pm, the shop fills up with wine and foodies to partake of an aperitif plus 4 tastings paired with 4 hors d’oeuvres. Wines are typically chosen by region, and our tasting was from the Pacific Northwest. We had 2 whites and 3 reds from three different Washington State wineries: Maison Bleue, O’Shea and Owen Roe. Proprietors George Cossette and Randy Clement imparted much information about the wines we tasted, the types of grapes used in the varietals and a bit of history on the winemakers.

The fantastic food was provided by Heirloom LA Catering. We had wild boar empanadas, mini tamales with finger limes, a tasty chicken and veggie dish and the final taste was a brownie and homemade banana ice cream dessert that was out of this world. I made sure to pick up their card and would definitely recommend them if you are in the market for a caterer. You can check them out at heirloomLA.com I am amazed that Silver Lake Wine puts on such a nice pairing and charges so little. The whole thing only costs $20 per person. I may have to make this a weekly event, as long as I can keep myself from buying a truckload of wine on my way out the door. Let’s just say my gift certificate was put to good use! Go with friends or make some new ones, but definitely go. You won’t be disappointed!

Whether you live in Silver Lake, are thinking of relocating or are simply curious, it’s always fun to hear some of the lesser- know facts about an area.

Silver Lake Was Estalished in the 1900s, with the creation of the Silver Lake Reservoir. In the 1920s, City Planners started to invest in the building of underground utilities and cement streets to create a residential development in Silver Lake.

The Population of Silver Lake is 30,972 as of the 2000 census, with a wide variety of subcultures and ethnicities. It is also known to have a very large gay population.

Silver Lake got its name from Silver Lake Reservoir, which was named after Herman Silver, the Los Angeles Water Board commissioner who was instrumental in the establishment of the reservoir. It was originally named “Ivanhoe” by Hugo Reid, who said that the rolling hills reminded him of those in his hometown in Scotland.

• Beck - a four-time platinum singer-songwriter popular for his music which was a combination of social criticism and musical experimentation
• Chris Parnell - one of the comedians starring in the show Saturday Night Live

Satisfy your sweet tooth at Lark Cake Shop in Silver Lake

Cupcakes are definitely back in style and I know of no better place to get one in Silver Lake than Lark Cake Shop.

Lark Cake Shop is the brain child of owners James and Colleen Standish who opened this lovely piece of Silver Lake heaven back in 2007. The Standishs' have been Silver residents for more than 20 years and they wanted to create a local business for friends and neighbors to enjoy.  Lark Cake Shop in Silver Lake provides a great selection of  cakes, cupcakes, cookies, pies and bars and all things yummy.  Their pastry chef, Sarah Hirata, uses nothing but the best ingredients - real eggs and pure cane sugar, Callebuat chocolate, Dutch cocoa powder and Madagascar Bourbon vanilla. Dairy products are growth hormone free and come from the Challenge Dairy Cooperative and this adorable bakery stays greens by using only compostable  packaging and utensils.

Lark Cake shop in Silver Lake is open 7 days a week and they even deliver.  On Wednesday, buy a cupcake and you get a coupon for a free cupcake on another day. Now that's a good reason to stop by on a Wednesday- don't we all need a little something to help us get through the rest of the week?! You can also drop in for one of their weekend special treats and watch for the changing seasonal favorites. There must be something pumpkin coming up soon with fall just a couple of days away!

 I'm glad to have Lark Cake shop as part of the Silver Lake Scene. It's a great stop for a cup of coffee and a yummy treat (their cream cheese frosting is devine!), but also a perfect place to buy cakes for a birthday party or special even. They've got cards and candles too so it's a one-stop shop if you're putting a party together or grabbing a last minute cake or dozen cupcakes for the office.

Aroma Restaurant in Silver Lake - definitely don't curb appraise this one!

Last night I had the good fortune to enjoy dinner at Aroma Restaurant in Silver Lake. I was there with a group to celebrate a friend's birthday or I may never have tried this fabulous spot.  Aroma is set in a strip mall at the corner of Sunset and Silver Lake Blvd.  Talk about a surpise! I was reminded of the old saying ‘don't judge a book by its cover'.  Who would have known such great food and service would be inside a place with such an unassuming exterior.

  

If you are a fan of Italian, I highly recommend Aroma Restaurant. From the hot, fresh bread to the tiramisu, we were not disappointed. My husband had one of the evening's specials- ‘surf and turf' which consisted of a delicious sirloin steak and butterflied shrimp and veggies sautéed to perfection.  My choice was the seafood pasta- also delicious and enough to serve an army.  Needless to say I came home with leftovers.

Our party took up almost the entire restaurant (Aroma Restaurant probably on seats about 30 people) and between us we tried most of the items on the menu plus a few of the specials including sea bass and lamb chop entrees and one of the most delicious mushroom and cheese mousses I've ever tasted!

The next time you are in the mood for Italian, give tAroma a try. I can't imagine you'll be disappointed. You'll find it at 2903 W Sunset Blvd, in Silver Lake.

Silver Lake's 30th Annual Sunset Junction Street Fair takes place this weekend, August 21 and 22

Silver Lake's Annual Sunset Junction Street Fair if one of the largest celebrations of diversity in Los Angeles.  The Sunset Junction Neighborhood Alliance was created to acknowledge the diversity of the neighborhoods of Silver Lake, Echo Park and Los Feliz. Long recognized as an area where artists, musicians, students, straight, gays and people of all ages live in harmony and respect for each others way of life- Sunset Junction is the perfect location for such a celebration.  A huge number of people gather at this annual event and this year will be no different with and expected attendance of  75,000-100,000 each day.

Besides being a great place to get out for rides, attractions food booth and tons of live music, Silver Lake's Sunset Junction Street Fair is also a good cause.  All proceeds benefit Sunset Junction area youth programs. These programs provide work training, art classes, after schools programs and more to the area's under-served and at-risk youth from the community. So come out on the weekend an have fun while supporting a good cause at the same time.

Silver Lake California's Sunset Junction

Silver Lake Calfornia's Sunset Junction is the place to be.  When people talk about buying real estate in SilverlLake, it used to mean "prime Silver Lake"- the area nearest the reservoir and the hills known as the Moreno Highlands.  That area is still plenty popular but the price of homes there can be pretty high. Over the past few years, another part of Silverlake known as Sunset Junction has become the hot topic.

Sunset Junction is literally the place where Santa Monica Blvd. intersects with Sunset Blvd. The name is a carryover from the days of the old Los Angeles "red car line", Pacific Electric Railway Company's passenger service.  Rail service was discontinued in the mid 1950's but the Sunset Junction name stuck.  Silver Lake visitors and residents alike enjoy the variety of shops and eateries for several blocks of Sunset Blvd in this area. Demand for homes within walking distance of Sunset Junction has increased dramatically in recent years, prompting the development of the popular live/work Lofts at 4111 Sunset Blvd.

Less gritty than in past years, Sunset Junction boasts a large selection of cafes, shops and restaurants.  The building that once housed a carniceria  is now home to the Silverlake Conservatory of Music- a non-profit organization that offers reasonably priced music lessons and grants scholarships to children in need.  In the same building you'll find the hip coffee bar, Intelligentsia with its outdoor tables and umbrellas, The Cheese Store of Silver Lake, and Café Stella, a lively French Bistro. Right at the corner is a shoe store called Kicks.  This isn't your grandfather's Silver Lake!

Housing south of Sunset Blvd and within a short jaunt to Sunset Junction has become increasing popular, no doubt due to the plethora of things to do and see in the area. Recently a storybook cottage at 970 Maltman garnered a lot of attention and received multiple offers within days of going on the market and last week a 3 bedroom, 2 bath craftsman at 1401 Edgecliff Dr. also collected multiple offers in just 4 days.  It looks like Sunset Junction has finally come into its own.

New Silver lake Library Grand Opening on Monday, November 16

The wait is almost over! Yes, Silver Lake's new, LEED certified library is set to have its grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration on Monday, November 16 at 10:00am.  Special guests will include Los Angeles Mayor Anotnio Villaragosa, Los Angeles City Coucil President Eric Garcetti, Councilman Tom LaBonge and the Citiy Library Martin Gomez.

If you can't make it to the ceremony on Monday morning, you'll have another chance to cebrate on the weekend.  The Friends of the Silver Lake Library who have been instrumental in getting this library built, are hosting a Silve Lake Community Open House.  This Celebration will take place on Saturday, November 21st from 10 am to 5 pm. There will be music, food, and fun for everyone.

Parking is limited so this is a great opportunity to get a little fresh air and walk or bike to the event.  Maybe take a trip around the the reservoir first so you can burn off some of the to-be-eaten goodies at the event!

The new Silver Lake Library is located at 2411 Glendale Blvd at the corner of Glendale Blvd and Silver Lake Blvd.  See you there!

The Cheese Store of Silver Lake - A great place to shop  for cheese, wine and other tasty treats in Sunset Junction in Silver Lake

 

Sure, you can get a variety of cheese, wine and gift basket fare at Trader Joes, in Silver Lake, but for a true gastronomical experience, you should really check out The Cheese Store of Silver Lake. Chris Pollan, the store's proprietor, decided that after 25 years managing music tours, it was time for a change. He spent three years working with a friend at The Cheese Shop of Beverly Hills and decided he'd found his life long passion. So with a sense of adventure, he opened The Cheese Store of Silver Lake in November of 2002. It's pretty obvious from the crowds the shop gathers that this well kept secret is not such a secret any more!

Most local folks are familiar with the great little grouping of shops at the Corner of Sunset Blvd and Sanborn Avenue in the Sunset Junction area of Silver Lake. Pollan was somewhat of a pioneer when he open The Cheese Store of Silver Lake in what had been a veterinarian's office tucked behind a carniceria facing Sunset Blvd. Honestly, when the Cheese Store opened in 2002 I knew change was coming to the area in a big way. The carniceria is no longer, and that building now houses  Silver Lake's hugely popular Intelligentsia Coffee Bar. Just to the right of the Cheese Store you'll find Café Stella with it's patio dining. Apparently Pollan's crystal ball was working perfect in 2002- talk about picking the right location at the right time! (Speaking of crystal balls, if witchcraft and fortune telling are your thing you should check out  Cauldron Kitty in Silver Lake).

The Cheese Store of Silver Lake is 1000 square feet of some of the most fabulous cheese, salamis, wines and accoutrements anyone could ask for, but cheese is definitely the staring attraction.

The Cheese Store of Silver Lake carries alot of domestic cheese in order to support American producers but you'll also find array of cheese from all over the world. The staff is knowledgeable and happy to let you sample before you buy. When I stopped in the store on Sunday I picked up 3 delicious and incredibly different cheese: Raw sheep Manchego from Spain, some incredibly soft and yummy raw Cow Gorgonzola Dolce from California and what turned out to be out favorite- Midnight Moon goat cheese from Holland California. Needless to say, we were delighted with our selections and at the rate we're going we'll be due for another visit  to Sunset Junction next weekend!

                 

The atmosphere at the Cheese Store of Silver Lake is casual and friendly but business is definitely brisk these days. Our last visit was certainly different from the first time we'd been in there. The store was brimming with people eagerly sampling cheeses, asking questions, and checking out the selection of crackers, olives, oils, vinegars, pastas and locally made confections. I had a hard time staying away from the very tempting home made marshmallows near the cash register!

If you're having a house warming party or heading to an evening at the Hollywood Bowl, The Cheese Store of Silver Lake is a great place to get what you need. Besides their selection of fresh breads and Panini sandwiches, you can order picnic baskets and party platters of meats, cheese, fruits and antipasto and grab some crackers to go with it. The Cheese Store of Silver Lake is located in Silver Lake's Sunset Junction at 3926 W. Sunset Blvd with parking behind the store on Sanborn Ave. Open daily, there's someone there to help you Monday - Saturday 10am - 6:30pm and Sundays from 11-5. I think I may just swing in there for lunch one day soon and grab another wedge of that fantastic Midnight Moon Goat Cheese!
